Florence Ofovwe(nee BATEY) is a trustee of the board of Samuel & Alice BATEY foundation (SABAF). She spent the first twelve years of her life in the rural and serene countryside of Eku. Her secondary education took her to Baptist Girls High School Agbor. For higher education she followed the teaching career by obtaining the National Certificate in Education, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Adult Education and English, then a Master’s and PhD in Educational Management. She worked as a classroom teacher for several years, then moved to the Post Primary Education Board as administrative staff. She was appointed as a Permanent Secretary and is now retired from the civil service. In recognition of the importance of education in personal and nation building, Dr(Mrs) Ofovwe has aligned her post-retirement activities to the vision of her parents, Samuel and Alice Batey. She engages young people in meaningful conversations with special interests in personal development, life skills and service orientation. Her family lives in Benin City and is connected to SABAF projects.
The Samuel and Alice Batey Foundation (SABAF) was born from a desire to honor two lives that quietly transformed countless others. Deacon Samuel Batey and Deaconess Alice Batey were known in their community not for wealth or position, but for the way they lived: with humility, grace, and a fierce commitment to serving others.
They believed every person deserved a chance—to learn, to grow, to live with dignity. From their kitchen table to their community’s places of worship, the Bateys modeled what it meant to lead with love and integrity.
Founded by their descendants and inspired by their principles, SABAF seeks to bring structured, sustainable support to the causes closest to their hearts.
To honor the enduring legacy of Samuel and Alice Batey by promoting environmental stewardship, empowering education, and supporting the less privileged through hands-on service, advocacy, and sustainable community programs.
A world where every individual, regardless of background, has access to a safe environment, a meaningful education, and the dignity of opportunity.
Each of SABAF’s core values is directly tied to the Bateys’ lived philosophy:
Responsibility means owning our role in caring for the Earth and each other.
Accountability calls us to act with transparency and stay true to our word.
Respect drives our commitment to inclusive, people-first service.
Dignity means seeing every life as worthy of care, compassion, and opportunity.
The Bateys didn’t simply speak these values—they embodied them. And now, through SABAF, we work to do the same.
Responsibility: We take ownership of our impact and make decisions for the good of future generations.
Accountability: We hold ourselves to high standards, measuring outcomes
and learning as we go.
Respect: We listen first, act in humility, and ensure every voice is valued.
Dignity: We approach all people as equals—worthy of hope, healing, and humanity.
These values are our compass and our commitment.
